importance of dental hygieneSure, we all brush our teeth on a daily basis twice a day, but are we really taking care of our mouth the way we should be? There is so much more to dental hygiene than those two brushings daily! Not taking care of your mouth can lead to more than just bad breath. It can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and more. Using an electric toothbrush to clean your teeth can improve teeth, gums, and overall oral health.

In expectant mothers, poor dental hygiene can mean you are seven times more likely to deliver a premature baby. Half of the cases of severe gum disease are due to the effects of smoking. This increases your chance of getting gum disease by three in comparison to those who have never smoked.

Halitosis is caused by a lack of regular brushing and flossing. It is small food particles stuck between teeth that collect and emit bacteria and gives them a smell. Halitosis is more easily described as bad breath and it is the third most frequent reason for people to seek dental care after tooth decay and gum disease. The odor is caused by bacteria that is below the gum line, as well as on the back of the tongue. On rare occasions, this can be a symptom of an underlying condition like liver failure.

Periodontal Disease is one of two gum types of gum disease. It is when the bone deterioration around the teeth leads to the loss of teeth. The most common cause of periodontal disease is plaque-induced inflammatory conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis. If left untreated, the inflammation causes the gums and supporting bone structure to deteriorate. This can lead to gum recession and even tooth loss. It can also be associated with other diseases like diabetes and heart disease. In order to prevent periodontal disease, make sure to brush the teeth after meals. This will remove debris and plaque trapped in your teeth and gums.

Atherosclerosis is high levels of bacteria in the mouth that can lead to clogging the Cartoid Artery which increases the risk of stroke. This again goes back to the bacteria and plaque that could have easily been prevented by regular dental hygiene like brushing and flossing.

Respiratory problems can be caused by bacteria from periodontal disease that travels through the bloodstream to the lungs, in which it can aggravate respiratory systems and especially worse for those who had prior respiratory issues.

Heart Disease is 2x more likely to develop in those who have periodontal disease. This is due to the artery narrowing as a result of the periodontal bacteria and plaque entering the bloodstream through the gums. In one study the presence of gum disease, cavities, and missing teeth was as good at predicting heart disease as cholesterol levels.

Diabetes is present in 95% of US adults who also have periodontal disease and ⅓ have advanced periodontal disease that has lead to tooth loss.

Erectile Dysfunction can be caused by periodontal bacteria that travels through the bloodstream inflaming blood vessels and blocking blood flow to the genitals. Men with periodontal disease are seven times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction than those with good dental hygiene and habits.

So how do we avoid all of this life-threatening trouble? Easily, by improving our dental health, by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and replacing a toothbrush every 3-4 months. Making sure to floss daily, eat a balanced diet and schedule and attend regular dental checkups and exams.
